Typica has a long a convoluted history, and as such, is one of the most important coffee varieties in the world. It was originally selected from southwestern Ethiopia from where it made its way to Yemen in the 1400s or 1500s, and then around the entire world. It is a tall variety known for its very good cup quality but very low yields. It is also very susceptible to coffee leaf rust and other disease which means it has been largely wiped out or replaced by more resistant varieties in most of the world. Small isolated pockets of Typica still remain in some places and these are often highly prized and protected.
