Java was introduced to the island on Java from Ethiopia by the Dutch in the early 1800s. It was introduced to Costa Rica in 1991 and has since become more popular in Central and South America. It is a tall variety known for very good cup quality and medium yields. It also is tolerant to most diseases and requires little fertiliser making it popular with smallholder producers. It is a selection from an Ethiopian landrace population called Abyssinia.
