Castillo is a leaf rust resistant variety developed by Cenicafé in Colombia. It took 23 years of research and development to create and was released in 2005, two years before a leaf rust epidemic hit Colombia, decimating non resistant varieties. Despite having some Robusta lineage (from which it gets its leaf rust resistance), Castillo has the capacity to produce high-scoring (88+) specialty coffee, is a dwarf variety, and has very good yields. Today, most of the coffee produced in Colombia is Castillo.
